Farmers, growers and nurserymen all go on constantly about the weather. Global warming there may be, tonight’s temperatures are forecast to drop to -5°C and tomorrow’s -4°C. Hopefully plants will have been conditioned to this at the end of the winter. We had hoped to have put out the first perennials on the sales benches. This has been delayed until we can see a 5 days weather forecast which offers a milder prospect.
5th June.
Wet weather has been good for the garden and the wisterias have looked splendid on the giant pergola despite the frosts of April. Moist and cool weather bring out the best in a plant’s foliage and the border comprising largely of yellow plants is looking luxurious.
The cold of early spring effects shrubs. Some suffer as a result of frost and others take on a slightly dull appearance. The first flush of spring growth has given them a new fresh appearance.
This does not get the attention it deserves in the spring because of the massive amount of work that there is to do in producing the plants. This spring there are more tender perennials, annuals and vegetables than ever and with the cool weather their quality is holding well. Some lines have sold out but there are still plenty of fresh good looking plants. It is not too late for planting tomatoes and beans and these will still give you a good crop.
